Cancer has become the number one topic in today's Western society. Every time you hear the words, "health risk" or "health problems" what is one of the first things that pops into your head? Cancer is probably up there in the top 3, if you are like most people. It is a wide spread disease, and many people have suffered from it or have died as a result of it in North America, and scientists project that many more people will continue to die from cancer in the next few years. They are looking all the time for a cure, and until they find one, they have encouraged us to do all that we can to be proactive and prevent cancer from getting a hold of our lives and our families' lives. There are many things that we can do to prevent cancer, and some of these preventative measures include eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, cutting back on sweets, using sunscreen, quitting smoking, and more. It seems like about half of us are actually obeying these rules, while others just think that they will be fine without them. One example of this is our opinions about tanning beds. We have been hearing for a few years now about how tanning beds can cause cancer, but only half of users have stopped using tanning beds to get a tan. The people who run tanning salons will tell you that the ultraviolet rays used in their tanning beds are the exact same as the sun's rays, but when you consider that we often wear sunscreen when going out in the sun, it makes that argument void. A new study was just published in the "Lancet Oncology" journal, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and it was all about the effects of tanning beds in regards to cancer. We have been hearing for years how they are not healthy and cause cancer, but this study has opened eyes to just how harmful tanning beds are. Cigarettes have finally made their way in our minds to extremely harmful and death causing things. Well, get ready to make some room in your mind, because according to this study, tanning beds are right up there with tobacco! Scientists have equated the risk of cancer through the ultraviolet rays of tanning beds to the risk of cancer through smoking. We all know that smoking causes lung cancer - it is a well known fact. Just as it is certain that smoking causes lung cancer, it is certain now that tanning in tanning beds causes skin and eye cancer. It is a fact that hopefully will soon be well known, and will hopefully wake some people up to the risks they are taking with their health. Scientists are saying that the ultraviolet rays in tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer by 75% and they have now put this risk in the top cancer risk category! The scientists in the study recommend getting a tan some other way, like through self tanning lotions, which are harmless. |
