Uncovering Your Uniqueness and Pursuing Your Passion Being unique is a gift. Experiencing life in a different way than most people is something that should truly be admired and praised. However, traditionally most people are afraid of new ideas and ways of doing things. Often people shun and scorn those who are different because they fear change. Throughout history great thinkers have been shunned from their communities because their ideas threatened a stable way of life. But being different and unique is something that should be proudly displayed to world. When it comes to individuality, following your passion is the key to happiness.
The reason that so many people often feel ashamed or afraid of their unique qualities is that they are afraid that others will judge them or dislike them. They would rather conform than face the scrutiny of individuality. However, there are ways to uncover your unique qualities and still find the friendship and acceptance we are all looking for.
Firstly, it's important to realize that most people value new ideas but are often jealous or afraid that new ways of thinking, acting, dressing, or being will leave them behind; they react cruelly out of defense. When you begin to accept your own unique qualities, others may often react with anger. However, finding who you truly are and what truly makes you happy should be your number one goal.
Once you have understood that uncovering your unique abilities is the key to happiness, you should begin to look inward for what is missing from your life. Often, as we get older, our choices begin to seem more and more limited. We no longer feel the carefree possibility of life. We set aside our passions for a more stable lifestyle. However, sometimes thinking back to a time when the world seemed limitless is a good place to start in uncovering your passions. What truly made you happy as a child? What did you love to do more than anything? Although enjoyable activities such as coloring would not directly translate into adulthood, the principles remain the same.
Once you have identified what your passion is, you need to feel good about it. Often it can seem silly to admit that you have started painting again or that you are trying to write a novel but we are only afraid of how people will react. Remember, often when people react negatively to a life change, it is because they are afraid of change. However, you need to feel great that you are doing something to better yourself. Don't let people dictate how you feel. Telling people with pride that you have uncovered your unique talent will give you power and credibility.
Some people think that pursuing a passion means giving up a stable lifestyle and completely changing your life. However, passion and career and not necessarily synonymous. Pursuing a passion can be as manageable as taking a class once a week, or volunteering to share your gifts with others. Remember, no matter how big or small the dream, going uncovering what you are passionate about is the only way to find true happiness. |

The Power of Goal Setting Life can get overwhelming at times. It seems that everyday presents a new challenge that pulls us in a different direction than where we though we were heading. It can be so easy to feel as if your plans or priorities have gotten off track and that life is passing you by. However, staying on track is as simple as setting goals for yourself. When you know where you want to end up, it is much easier to find a way to get there.
Setting goals is both a short and long-term process. When it comes to life, career, and relationships, it's important to figure out what your big goals are. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 15? 50? What are the long-term things that you want out of life. Kids? A family? To own your own business? These goals are important to establish first because they help you choose which paths to take throughout life.
Once you know what your big, overarching goals are, it is important to set small, attainable goals that can be accomplished in small time periods. If you eventually want to own your own bakery, what goals should you be setting for the next week, month, or year to begin making strides toward your big goal. Not only will small goals help you achieve your larger one, they also give you reachable benchmarks and a feeling of accomplishment on a regular basis. You can feel good that you are on the path to success.
On the journey toward reaching a life goal it is important not to let detours and roadblocks get you off course. It would be nice if everyone got exactly what he or she wanted from life, but that is not feasible. It is important to realize that on the road to success, there are many ups, downs, and barriers. Even though these detours might make you want to give up, remember to keep your eye on the ultimate goal. You may need to stop, reassess, and choose a new course.
Sometimes goals change. You may be doing well on your path toward your ideal future but if life isn't fulfilling anymore, you may need to reassess your big goal. As we grow and change, what seemed like a great idea five years ago may no longer seem as ideal. Often the answer lies in a shift in priorities. Maybe at 20 years old being a CEO sounded like a fantastic goal. However, at 40 years old, your priorities may be focused on your family or your health. It may no longer be desirable to be a workaholic.
The most important concept to keep in mind when creating goals is to reflect on what you will wish you had done at the end of your life. Think about being an elderly person and reflecting back on your life, what is it that you think you would have wanted to accomplish? Identifying what goals would have led to a fulfilling life will help you feel comfortable in your choices. |

The Path to Peace Finding peace in life is a seemingly unattainable goal. Many of us are troubled and feel as if we will never be free of our demons. These demons come in many forms and in varying severity. The loss of a loved one, dealing with addiction or mental illness, or general unhappiness can make life seem too daunting to face. When life is full of turbulence and tumultuousness, finding peace can feel like a never-ending, impossible journey. However, peace is possible only when you believe that you can find it. Believing in a peaceful existence is the only way to possibly achieve it.
Many people know that they are not well but can't wrap their heads around what it would be like to feel at peace with the world. They can't find peace because they don't know what it means. Although peace comes in many different forms and will vary for every person, generally peace is a feeling that everything will be OK and that there is no problem too big to overcome. If you can begin to feel that this is an achievable way to live, you can begin to find peace in your own life.
After believing that you have control over deciding to let peace into your life, you have to start identifying what it is that is blocking you from achieving a peaceful existence. What is it that you cannot let go of that is making you unhappy? The reality of life is that bad situations happen to everyone. We can't avoid or control many of the outside influences in our life. However, we absolutely can control what we choose to dwell on and obsess over. Only you can choose to let go of situations and circumstances that have made you unhappy. Think about your life, what is stopping you from feeling happy and peaceful?
Once you have identified what has been keeping you from finding peace, you have to choose to let it go. For some, this is much harder than for others. Some people have experienced true tragedy and trauma, others may not be able to escape a memory from childhood or the loss of a loved one. However, the only way to find peace is to choose to put aside what is beyond your control and focus on what is within.
Focusing on what you can control is the only way to regain power in your life. When you allow our actions and decisions to be determined for you, you give up any choice in your life. Finding the strength to choose how you will live, regardless of what has happened in your past, is the way to peace. When you allow yourself to be a victim of your circumstances you give up power to choose a life of happiness. Instead, you must make the choice to stay positive, to think positive, and to look toward the future rather than dwelling on the past. |

The Comparative and Competitive Disadvantage In today's society, competition is everywhere. We hear about tough job markets, outrageous dating adventures, and even sibling rivalry. Everyone is scrambling to be better than the next guy, trying to outmatch, outwit, and out perform their fellow competitor. For some, this process of putting themselves out into the spotlight is relatively easy. For others, the process of trying to compete with their fellow man is a daunting and hopeless process.
Everyone is highly competitive today. Rather than having a set of skills or a resume of experience to market, in today's culture everyone is expected to market him or herself. People are making decisions based on how a person presents himself or herself as a package. That package includes personality, charisma, talent, charm, wit, and a sprinkling of old-fashioned skill. People are judged not by how skillful or qualified they are but by the package they present. For some, this can be easy, for others, it can feel as if they were left out of some elusive club. For these people, existing in this world can be challenging, though not impossible.
Many people feel as if they lack a competitive edge because they don't have the newest, shiniest presentation. However, there is enormous value in experience and know-how. Gaining a competitive edge may not mean having to be a smooth talker, but it does mean having to talk yourself up. Often, people can feel as if their presentation feels like bragging however, marketing yourself as a knowledgeable competitor can be more effective than trying to sell your personality. You must be prepared to appear sound in the knowledge that your skills or know-how are not only important, they are imperative.
Part of competing in a society full of fierce competitors is identifying what new, different, or rare qualities you possess that set you apart from others. Part of having a competitive advantage involves standing out. Many people would rather die than bring undue attention to themselves but, in a competitive world, it is necessary to have something that defines you as important or irreplaceable. Even if you would rather keep the attention away from you and your life, your skill or trait can speak for itself as long as you understand how important it is. Being good at something should give you pride and you should want to share it with others. Don't be afraid to advertise your good qualities, even if you'd rather remain hidden in other aspects of your life.
It is a hard truth that there is a competitive advantage for those willing to shamelessly market him or herself, unafraid of scorn or ridicule. Larger-than-life personalities can't stay hidden and many times they are quick to steal the spotlight. If you are a skilled or interesting person with no desire to make a scene, it can feel as if you are being passed by. Part of having a competitive edge is marketing. Fortunately, that marketing may be effective when applied to a singular, important aspect of your personality rather than putting everything out on the table. |

Self Improvement Goals and Motivation Self-improvement is a multimillion-dollar industry. Between books, seminars, lectures, and electronic media, there is an endless sea of products designed to make you a better version of yourself. However, self-improvement is not as complicated as some may have you believe. Regardless of what aspect of your life you are hoping to change or improve, using a few simple techniques will produce results every time when approached with conviction and determination.
Firstly, self-improvement is a choice. No one can force you to be better or motivate you to change. Self-improvement must start with the self. You must truly want to change before it can happen. It may be that you have hit a low that you realize you need to get out of, or maybe you just feel that life is not as fulfilling as it could be. Whatever the reason, the essential first step in self-improvement is a true desire to change. If you don't want to change your life, you will never be motivated to put in the work necessary.
The first step in self-improvement is setting a goal. Whether you want to loose weight, change careers, or find happiness in a relationship, you need to see where it is you hope end up. Establish a goal, not a timeline. Goals are not guarantees; we have to allow that some goals will be achieved easily and quickly, while others may take longer. The trick is not to give up on them when you feel like it is taking too long to achieve them. Keeping a goal in sight and not settling for less will help keep you on track.
The only way to change your life is through self-motivation. Many people hope that someone will help them, or that life will hand them the things they want. However, successful people don't wait for life to come to them, they go out and ask for what they want. Self-motivation means never sitting back and allowing things to happen to you. You have to be willing to work and put yourself out there to achieve your goals. It may seem that it is easier for others to demand what they want, but the truth is that no one is born into greatness, successful people have had to work hard and overcome insecurities to achieve their goals.
Lastly, you must believe that you will not fail. Obviously, failure is a relative term. Everyone experiences failures throughout life, it is unavoidable. However, some failures we can control. If you opt out of going on a job interview because you are afraid of the outcome, you have allowed yourself to fail. Never allowing yourself to succumb to failure is hugely important in self-improvement.
You are the only thing you can control in life. Although some situations may seem to knock you down, you have the choice to pick yourself up and try down a new path. Never allow yourself to feel that circumstances control you, you always are in control of yourself. |

At some point, almost every person in the gym looks in upon the focused faces in a spinning class and wonders what it is all about. Common questions are: What is it? Is it fun? Does it hurt? How do I do it? Does it work?
What is it? Spinning was invented in 1989 by elite cyclist "Jonny G." Goldberg as a way to maintain top physical condition for races. It is an aerobic exercise in a group setting using specialized stationary bicycles. Usually, a single instructor leads the class through routines to stimulate the feelings and sensations of an outdoor workout. Using visualizations and different movements, riders do hill climbs, sprints, and interval training. Pace can be varied throughout the workout, along with resistance.
Is it fun? Of course everyone has their own ideas of fun, but most spinning fans will swear that the intense workouts are actually fun. This is probably dependent upon the instructor's ability to motivate, provide inspiring visualizations, and use great music. Another aspect of spinning that proves popular among exercisers is that it is simple, there are no complex movements requiring coordination to test your frustration levels. Also boosting the fun factor is that it is a group activity so that you can go with your friends and share the experience with others.
Does it hurt? Since spinning is low impact, it is relatively safe. However, as with any exercise, overdoing it can cause injury. Listen to your body and don't overexert yourself, it's not a race. Adjust your pace and resistance as you need. Also, incorrect postures or seat positions can cause injuries, especially in the lower back and knees. Since spinning is a great workout, you should experience some muscle soreness, which means it's working.
How do I do it? Most gyms these days offer spinning classes. You can ask around to see what people think of the different instructors, or talk to the instructors themselves to choose a class best for you. Sometimes different levels of classes are offered, so opting for a beginning class is always a good start. Wear comfortable, light clothing and supportive shoes with stiff soles. Running shoes and most sneakers are too soft and may cause your feet to lose circulation during the workout. Make sure you drink a lot of water before, bring a water bottle for the workout, and rehydrate after. Talk to the instructor and let him or her know that you are new to spinning. Make sure your seat is at the proper height. You should be able to extend your leg with your knee slightly bent when your foot is at the lower end of the pedal.
Does it work? Spinning is a high intensity aerobic workout, burning around 400-600 calories in 40 minutes. It is also great for toning and strengthening your lower body muscles. It is easy for beginners, and because you are in charge of your own pace, it is suitable for almost any level of fitness. With additional elements like target heart rate training and distance goals, it can be a very comprehensive workout to burn more calories, boost your strength and heighten your overall fitness. |
