Stage of Digestion
Our topic is the stage of digestion in the whole process of digesting. It starts after food enters the mouth and is broken down into bolus by chewing and salivary enzymes. The bolus then travels down the esophagus in a process called peristalsis. The esophagus is long and muscular. The bolus then enters the stomach which can hold up to 2 litres of food and liquid. Inside the stomach is gastric juice which can help break down the food even more. The bolus is then broken down into chyme. This process can take from two to six hours. Inside the stomach, there are two sphincters which are round muscles that can open to allow material to pass through. If you vomit, the flow of material is reversed. Once the chyme leaves the stomach, it enters the small intestines. Once the chyme leaves the first metre of the small intestine called the duodenum, the stage of digestion is complete.
